Hey there curious minds! I'm Joshua Macfie, and I'm excited to share my journey as an electronics engineer with you. I've been immersing myself in the world of digital and embedded design, power electronics, and RF engineering and renewable energy systems, and it's been an incredible adventure!
I started my engineering journey with a strong foundation, earning a B.S. in Electrical & Computer Engineering (with a math minor) from Texas Tech University and an A.S. in Engineering from McLennan Community College. I actually back transferred a credit to McLennan to finish off my Associates. Those guys at MCC are fantastic! Shout out to Dr. Andreas and Paulina Sidwell! I digress; with this knowledge, I've been exploring various aspects of electronics engineering, from wide bandgap test development and EMS device communications to high power magnetics and network architecture design. It's like having a master key to unlock the secrets of the tech world!
One of my proudest achievements is designing test stands for evaluating SiC MOSFETs in pulsed power applications and creating a chip on board design for SiC testing. Building out a multiplexed high power measurement system controlled by a micro-controller was absolutely satisfying! Being able to add an FPGA to the mix used to run real time signal processing and communicate results to a Linux box was a gigantic cherry on top! It's an exhilarating experience to push the boundaries of power electronics technology! My research into maximized H field low inductance power coils is another example of my passion for cutting-edge technology that keeps me motivated and inspired. Digging deep into the mathematics and history of inductive coils and separating out and analyzing controllable variables piqued my interest! From there, delving into the present state of the art and culminating all of the research and analysis into a Comsol multiphysics simulation to see the proof behind the work proved not only highly valuable but just a rewarding. Holding the final product in hand was a very proud moment.
In addition to my hardware expertise, I am also well-versed in programming languages such as Python, Bash, C, C++, and VHDL/Verilog. This versatility has allowed me to develop sophisticated software solutions for energy management systems, cryptocurrency energy solutions, trivial task automation and other applications, making me a well-rounded engineer.
Throughout my career, I've taken on projects that showcase my adaptability and love for learning. From collaborating on an automated tank using an FPGA and other circuitry to developing an automated environmental system for the Mars Desert Research Station, I've applied my skills to diverse and challenging projects. I am always eager to expand my knowledge and take on new challenges in the ever-evolving field of electronics engineering.
As a leader in my field, I've had the privilege of serving as a Co-Principal Investigator on grants from renowned organizations like ESTCP, SETO, and TWC. Managing teams and projects that drive innovation in the electronics engineering world and renewable energy world has been a rewarding experience, and I am committed to continuous growth and learning from every opportunity.
I am passionate about sharing my knowledge and contributing to the advancement of the industry. I've co-authored publications in the renewable energy field and have a patent pending on a load control priority grouping system. I also lead students every chance I get through Texas Tech University capstone programs and have made a YouTube channel devoted to electronics solutions that seemed to be skipped over during my tenure as a student. Giving back to the community and making a positive impact is a core value that drives me forward.
